With a passion for player development and a mindset rooted in discipline and teamwork, Coach AJ Alfrey is helping shape the next generation of athletes, on and off the ice. Here are five things to know about Coach AJ Alfrey

1. Hockey Has Always Been Part of His Story

A Schaumburg native and Conant High School graduate, AJ’s hockey journey started on roller blades in third grade before transitioning to the ice. His playing career reached a high level, earning a spot on the All-State Showcase team and advancing to the junior ranks with the Cleveland Lumberjacks. He went on to play at the University of Central Oklahoma, where he served as a four-year captain for the Division I ACHA program.

Off the ice, AJ holds a degree in Kinesiology and has built a career in the fitness industry. He currently works with the Illinois Bone & Joint Institute, helping athletes and adults optimize performance and overall health. When he’s not at the rink, you’ll likely find him on the golf course or spending time with his wife, Courtney, and their son, Hayes.

2. Coaching is About Giving Back

With more than 15 years of coaching experience, AJ began his coaching journey in 2012 and has since worked with several respected programs, including the Chicago Blues, Northwest Chargers, and Highland Park High School. Now in his fifth season with the Reapers Hockey Association, who call Nicholas Sportsplex home, he serves as assistant coach for the 2013 Bantam Minor team while also leading strength and conditioning efforts, bringing a well-rounded approach to athlete development.

3. He Builds More Than Hockey Players

Hockey is more than a sport to AJ, it’s a foundation for life. He emphasizes discipline, accountability, and teamwork, helping players develop habits that extend far beyond the rink. His coaching style is centered on building confident, responsible athletes who understand what it means to be part of something bigger than themselves.

4. Development Happens Everywhere

“The Sportsplex provides a premier environment for youth development,” AJ said. “Having the ability to practice on the ice and train in the same facility gives our athletes the best opportunity to excel.”

At the Nicholas Sportsplex, AJ focuses on creating a culture built on leadership, a team-first mentality, and a relentless work ethic, ensuring players are developing both physically and mentally every time they step into the facility.

5. There’s a Science Behind His Coaching

While many know him as a coach, AJ’s professional background adds another layer to his approach. As sales and marketing manager at IBJI, he’s deeply immersed in the science of movement and injury prevention. “If you see me watching a player’s stride closely,” he said, “I’m probably already thinking about how to help them move more efficiently and stay healthy.”
